Where can you find Batman, Superman, Captain Jack Sparrow plus thousands of other heroes, villains, comic book and movie characters all in one place?  This time of year, only Lucca, Italy.  While enjoying our Italian vacation Spencer lived out his ultimate fantasy, to attend Lucca’s Comic Con.  Each year the city of Lucca, Italy holds one of the biggest Comics and Games Festivals in the world.  Spencer and I decided to go for broke and dress up.  I donned the Mother of Dragons costume from Game of Thrones and Spencer dressed as Locke from the video game HALO.  Our friend Sacha picked us up and drove us to Lucca where we met her friend Giulia (in top picture).

Thankfully Sacha attends Lucca’s Comic Con every year and helped us get our wristbands and gain entry into the giant gaming tents.

We took only a few steps inside this mammoth structure when Spencer spotted the virtual reality booth.

A five euro fee later Spencer enjoyed a ten minute session defending a castle with a virtual bow and arrow.

After about an hour of weaving through the gaming tent we moved inside the city ramparts.

Located in Tuscany, the city of Lucca is encircled by a Renaissance-era wall roughly two a half miles around.

Armed with our map we set out to cover all corners of Lucca.

We attended the first day of the five-day festival.  Day one is always the least crowded.  On this day more than 34,000 people bought tickets.  The third day sold out with 80,000 tickets purchased.  Spencer relished seeing his favorite super heroes and the incredible costumes worn by festival goers.

After a few hours we enjoyed a snack of ramen noodles.

As the Mother of Dragons my main goal was to find and sit upon the Iron Throne. Thankfully the festival placed two along the wall. Mission accomplished.

When my Fitbit registered five miles we took a lunch break in Japan Town.

The chicken meatballs and curry rice made the long line worth the 30-minute wait.

Still not full from lunch, Spencer spotted an American hot dog stand.

Now with a satisfied stomach, Spencer asked to keep exploring.

Finally, after almost seven hours Spencer decided he wanted to return to Bagni di Lucca.  We boarded our bus and within minutes Spencer passed out from exhaustion.

I highly recommend Lucca’s Comic Con.  Buy tickets online as the queue for tickets was much longer than the line for those that just needed to turn in their printed tickets for the wristbands.
