This week marks the one year anniversary of our life changing trip to Italy. Spencer and I arrived in Bagni di Lucca the first week of June 2015. Gregg tasked me to find us a forever home somewhere in the Lucca region. By the end of the first day I knew without a doubt we would soon call Bagni di Lucca home. A few weeks into our trip, Gregg joined us and agreed. Spencer and I spent nine wonderful weeks in Bagni di Lucca preparing for our eventual move overseas. Now one year later we are in the final stages. We have sold one car, preparing to sell the other and Gregg’s motorcycle. We’ve made one unsuccessful trip to the Italian Embassy in Detroit, and plan our next trip in September. We plan to make our permanent move in mid October.
It was only fitting that on our one year anniversary, Spencer and i visited friends we met in Italy. During our cooking class in Florence we met the McDonnell family from Miami. See Too Hot for Florence for more information on that marvelous day. Since I am in South Florida this week for Nick’s yacht crew training Sandra McDonnell insisted we drive down for a visit.
Sandra, her daughter Alex, and son Joseph sat next to us during our pizza and gelato cooking class last July. Sandra and I became fast friends as did Spencer and Joseph.
Fittingly, Sandra and her family welcomed us into her Florida home with an Aperol spritz. This Italian cocktail embodies summer in Italy. Here is a picture of Gregg and I enjoying this refreshing beverage in Maiori last summer.
I’m grateful to Italy for introducing me to such remarkable people like Sandra, and traditions that tug at my heart strings. Hopefully next year, Sandra and I can meet up again, this time in Italy. We both share an amazing connection to all of Italy’s treasures and culture.
