Cannon fire announced the beginning of festivities at 10am. Dozens of locals donned traditional medieval attire and weaponry in Contessa Casalini Park. Besides the frequent rumble of cannon and rifle fire, the main event highlighted beautifully crafted crossbows and their owners’ archery skills.
Around 1:00pm the beat of drums began and a large procession took to the main street in La Villa. All participants marched to the town’s theatre and then broke for lunch. When festivities resumed a couple of hours later the final archers battled for first prize. By early evening Palio della Val di Luma wrapped up and another parade signaled the end of this year’s festivities.
As a huge history buff these events capture my heart and imagination. Each costume, weapon and artifact offers a unique look into Italian culture and history. Every participant wore his or her medieval apparel with honor. Please enjoy the pictures below and put next year’s Palio della Val di Lima on your calendar.
